Square 1 Theatrics, a Tulsa-based theater company with Tony, Drama Desk and Olivier Awards to its name, has joined the team of Broadway producers reviving Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, set to open April 7 at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre.
Co-founders of Square 1, Jay Krottinger and Ryan Jude Tanner, opened the production company back in 2012 with a homebase in Tulsa. Since then, the team has won a Tony for its revival of Pippin and now boasts two productions on Broadway – Tony-award winning Come From Away (2017) and Tony-nominated Waitress (2016). The pair is teaming up with Eva Price – of Dear Evan Hansen and Angels in America fame – for this revival.
“Oklahoma is our home and this musical is one of the most important and beloved in America’s musical theatre history,” says Tanner.
“Those roots run deep for us,” says Krottinger. “In fact, our very first project was Flipside: The Patti Page Story, based on the life of the singing sensation from Claremore, Oklahoma. Price understood that a place on this production team was incredibly personal to us when she invited us to join her as Associate Producer.”
Preview runs for the show have been overwhelmingly positive. TIME Magazine touted the revival as the “No. 1 theatrical event of the year,” and The New York Times dubbed it “spot-on and often illuminating.”
The show, directed by Daniel Fish, is currently in rehearsals.
