The state’s celebration of artist Allan Houser and his work on the centennial year of his birth continues with a fascinating look at his drawings. Allan Houser Drawings: The Centennial Exhibition opens Saturday, March 8, at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, 555 Elm Ave., in Norman on the University of Oklahoma campus. Perhaps most widely known for the abstract sculpture he produced toward the end of his life, the Oklahoma artist spent much time drawing throughout his long career depicting subjects as varied as Native American dancers, musicians, hunters, Southwestern landscapes and portraits. The drawings in this special exhibit were created to a number of different purposes – as stand-alone works, sketches for planning in other media (sculpture and paintings) and ideas for book illustrations. Allan Houser Drawings opens with a reception and public lecture at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the museum.
