Friday, Feb. 27 – Sunday, March 1

In a world under siege for the next big distraction, comic book fans will find the fun and action they crave in this year’s Marvel Universe Live! Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine and a host of other heroes (and villains) of the Marvel Comics roster will fly, swing and pummel their way to the Chesapeake Energy Arena, 100 W. Reno Ave., Oklahoma City. Marvel Universe Live! plays the first of six performances on Friday, Feb. 27. The battle between forces intent on destroying the world and those trying to save it takes place on the arena stage. The evil Loki is back, and he has a plan to summon a great power that could obliterate the entire universe. The heroes of this tale have a plan to stop him, but they’ll encounter plenty of enemies along the way, including Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin and more menaces. Unfortunately, these heroes and villains can only do so much entertaining on their own. Thankfully, they’ll get the help of backstage technicians who will be putting on a show of their own pairing dazzling visual effects, set and light designs and pyrotechnics with the casts’ long list of super powers. Marvel Universe Live! features more than 25 characters on stage for one big show that will allow fans to experience the hero saga in a new way. Shows are at 7 p.m. Feb. 27; 11 a.m. and 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28; and 1:30 and 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 1. Tickets are $20-$80 and available online at www.chesapeakearena.com.

Ansel Adams: Masterworks

Saturday, Feb. 28

Art by one of the most popular photographers of the 20th century will be featured at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, opening Saturday, Feb. 28. Running through May 10, Ansel Adams’ legacy will be on display in a collection of 48 works titled Ansel Adams: Masterworks. The show is expected to draw a large crowd; Mike Leslie, assistant director and curator at the museum, says, “Visitors to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum are attracted to great photography, and we know they admire the work of Ansel Adams.” A photographer and environmentalist, Adams found joy in nature at a young age. When he didn’t fit in at school, he discovered a place for himself outdoors, exploring the scenes that surrounded him. Before photography commanded his attention, the piano intrigued his artist mind. It was at 12-years-old that Adams learned to read and play the keys. The photographer within was already taking form. The almost five decades to follow took Adams on an adventure that audiences can experience through his lens. Known as a landscape photographer, Adams images depict natural environments across the country, with which he hoped to highlight from a different perspective than the average eye. This collection includes his works of nature, architectural studies, portraits and landscapes. The exhibit also includes a photo portrait of Ansel Adams by James Alinder. Organized by Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Northern California, Ansel Adams: Masterworks travels the country with Adams’ best works of art. Don’t miss its stop in Oklahoma. Thru March 22

An ongoing film festival installation at Tulsa’s Hardesty Arts Center, previewing films part of the 2015 Oklahoma Dance Film Festival, will continue through March 22. The project, a collection of short films that use dance to bring life and movement to the human experience, includes modern and contemporary styles. Throughout the rest of the scheduled exhibition, various films will be shown in a custom viewing theatre at Hardesty. For the remainder of February, enjoy earth and environment themed compositions, whose movements weave through nature and urban surroundings: The acclaimed Australian film GAIA will be screened, along with Afternoon of the Chimeras and Subway by Daniel Conrad, a Canadian artist. Beginning in March, audiences are offered dance of the humankind – films highlighting dances performed by “uniquely human” populations. On March 6, during the Brady Arts District’s First Friday Art Crawl, the exhibition will feature the film Darn Good Dancing. Voting is open throughout the exhibition for the “Best of the Fest.” Pick your favorite films, and find out at the end of March who’s on top. Red Ribbon Gala 2015

Tulsa CARES was founded in 1991, in direct response to the growing need for compassionate care for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Community leaders came together and developed a one-stop-source plan to respond to the AIDS epidemic.

This model brought all of the social services together under one roof which helped to reduce fragmentation, encouraged collaboration and co-operation among providers and eased the burden on clients and family members.

Friday, Feb. 20 – Saturday, Feb. 21

Experience this classic tale of love and triumph with the Tulsa Ballet. These strong, graceful dancers will be on pointe, Feb. 20-22, to tell the story of The Sleeping Beauty. As the prologue opens, audiences will witness the spell the vengeful Carabosse casts on the King and Queen’s newborn, Princess Aurora; on her sixteenth birthday, Aurora will prick her finger and die. Good thing The Lilac Fairy intervened and substituted death with a deep sleep that can only be cured by the kiss of a handsome prince who has truly fallen in love. During the next three acts, even after needles have been banished from the court, a bouquet of flowers from a mysterious woman will set the spell in motion, 100 years will pass over the sleeping beauty and finally, with the help of The Lilac Fairy, Aurora’s guardian angel it seems, Prince Florimund will place a kiss on Aurora’s lips with a honest heart.
