So this year’s Art of BBQ didn’t go quite as organizers expected. Scheduling conflicts in September meant that the annual cook-out wouldn’t be the same Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned event that attracted the biggest and baddest pit masters. Instead, this year’s competition has been made into a two-day street party in downtown Tulsa with a kick-off from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, followed by a full day of activities. The kick-off party at Legends Dance Hall & Saloon, 514 E. Second St., features great barbecue, wines, craft beer, a silent art auction, local films, live music and appearances by Louder Than a Bomb spoken word poets. Cost is $35, and proceeds benefit the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa. There will also be a VIP after party from 10 p.m.-2 p.m. at Back Alley Blues & BBQ, 116 S. Elgin Ave.
The following day’s events begin at 10 a.m. with festival art booths and a kids’ play area; the 11 a.m. OU vs. Texas Watch Party with tail gate cook-off at Back Alley; free swing, country-western and ballroom dance lessons at Legends; a 6:30 p.m. street dance; and the full-on street party with live music from 7 p.m.-midnight. Beginning at 3:30 p.m., food trucks roll in and the wings eating contest begins. Look for street art demonstrations through the day and more all in the Blue Dome District.
