Of all the great contemporary authors in the world, the U.K.’s Kazuo Ishiguro was named the winner of the 2013 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award. If you’d written novels like The Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go and The Unconsoled, you, too, would have been considered for this prestigious honor from the Tulsa Library Trust. Enlightening on human vulnerabilities and set against war or extraordinary circumstances, Ishiguro’s novels have made him one of the most celebrated fiction writers today. But you can hear about all these things plus what encourages him to continue writing such striking character studies. The author will speak and sign copies of his books at the Hardesty Regional Library’s Connor’s Cove theater, 8316 E. 93rd St. at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Before Ishiguro speaks, Teresa Miller, executive director of the Oklahoma Center for Poets & Writers at OSU-Tulsa, will be inducted into the Library Hall of Fame. The day is made for reading. If you’re looking for a little tradition in your holiday shopping, Tulsa has two markets that combine old with new and homespun flair.
The German-American Society of Tulsa opens its Christkindlmarkt 2013 this weekend. Modeled on outdoor holiday markets found throughout Germany, Christkindlmarkt runs from Friday, Dec. 6-Sunday, Dec. 8 at the German-American Society of Tulsa building on the northwest corner of 15th Street and Lewis Avenue. Enjoy a market filled with imported German gift items as well as the flavors of tasty traditional foods. Admission is free, but take some cash to enjoy a schnitzel sandwich and apfelstrudel. See www.gastulsa.org for more information.
The Tulsa Herb Society brings back the holiday gift market Carols & Crumpets: An Herbal Wonderland from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. This event has become a tradition for Tulsa and shoppers looking for something truly unique to give and decorate the home. Because everything has an herbal component, you’re sure to find plenty of soaps, candles, handmade ornaments, candies and other handmade goodies at the vendors’ tables. Look for it at the Tulsa Garden Center, 2435 S. Peoria Ave. Admission is free, but lunch at the Snowflake Café isn’t. Read more at www.tulsaherb.com.
It is perhaps the single, ubiquitous image of American culture, both in the subconscious of her people and in her global image. It has been glorified in literature and in film well before the latter had the benefits of color or sound. It’s the pejorative used by American critics but also the grudgingly admired singular image praised by people freed by U.S. soldiers’ blood in Europe. Twice.
“It” is the American cowboy, the drover, the romantic image of Americans’ conquering of the West and the lifestyle – real and romanticized – that sprung from it. From early figures like Gene Autry and Tex Ritter singing on the open range to Clint Eastwood and his award-winning work in the revisionist western, Unforgiven, cowboys and the work they do have been glamorized and heroes to countless children.
Today, though, the drover’s most archetypal responsibility – driving cattle from point A to point B, often across long distances and often through hostile territory – has been replaced by animal husbandry, by technology and by challenges more likely to relate to weather and government regulation than cattle rustlers and corrupt lawmen. Half a century ago, cowboys and the cattle ranching industry they support might well still have resembled those Hollywood-inspired images. Today’s cattle ranchers are as likely to be adept at composing feed mixtures, selective cattle breeding and utilizing computer models to plan adequate watering sites.
Ranching is, indeed, more industry than many would imagine; but less so than those who think it is entirely a high-tech, cookie-cutter automated process. Despite many changes, cattle ranching and the men and women who work in the industry still possess many of the same traits that have defined them since the challenge of the West: connection to the land and to the cattle, rugged individualism and a sense of heritage.

Is there a fashion icon or someone whose style you admire most? I am a complete lover of all things fashion, so it is hard for me to narrow just one fashion icon. Some of my favorites are Kanye West, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams and Andre 3000.
What is your favorite article of clothing? I love a nice scarf.
What designers do you admire most? Karl Lagerfeld at the Houses of Chanel and Fendi. Karl is the definition of innovation and a creative mind. He is always fashion forward but also staying true to the aesthetic of each particular house. Ricardo Tisci at the house of Givenchy. The mixture of grunge and Goth infused with cutting-edge high fashion has always been appealing to me.
What is your favorite accessory? A classic watch
When you want to look great with little effort, what’s your go-to outfit? Sometimes less is more. So, a nice tailored blazer with a nice pair of denim never gets old.
Do you prefer to dress up or dress down? There’s a thing called dressing down? I never knew.
Is there a fashion icon or someone whose style you admire most? I have been living in five different countries in the past 12 years, and what inspires me most are big cities and their streets buzzing with people. You will stumble across some incredibly stylish people with unique looks worthy of any fashion magazine. Paris, Dubai, London and NYC would be my favorite sources of fashion inspiration.
What was your first fashion moment? As a kid I always loved playing dress-ups and was obsessed with jewelry; I think that my defining fashion moment was when I got my first pair of designer shoes some 10 years ago – Marc Jacobs black patent pumps that still have their place of honor in my closet!
What is your favorite article of clothing? Right now I am obsessed with leather. A leather t-shirt is incredibly versatile, you can dress it up and dress it down, it goes with everything and gives a touch of trendy edginess to any look.
What is your favorite accessory? My Chanel 2.55 flap never leaves me those days. When you want to look great with little effort, what’s your go-to outfit? –Jeans, a white button-down and a pair of statement heels, you cannot go wrong with this look! Add a tailored blazer or a biker jacket for cooler days.
Do you prefer to dress up or dress down? People say that even when I dress down I still dress up, so I would say to dress up! I like to look polished in any circumstances.
