Enjoy the dog days of summer – and the final stretch before back-to-school madness – with community events galore.

Tulsa’s Arvest Convention Center hosts Oklahoma Comic Con, running Aug. 8-9. Tulsa Opera offers its first Book Club Series on Aug. 15, covering Little Women. Other can’t-miss options include Jazz on the Green at Guthrie Green, the Maker Faire at Expo Square on Aug. 29, and a Tulsa staple: the Blue Whale Comedy Festival, running at several venues downtown from Aug. 20-23.

In OKC, hot tickets include group kayaking excursions at Riversport OKC, alongside the Red Earth Festival, happening this year on Aug. 1-2 at the OKC Convention Center. Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Motors in the Alley event in OKC’s Automobile Alley on Aug. 16, and readers should venture to 300 Park Ave. on Aug. 22 for OKC Litfest – a celebration of language arts.

Around the state, events are ample: try the Firelake Fireflight Balloon Festival, Aug. 7-8 at 1702 S. Gordon Cooper Dr. in Shawnee, or head to the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival and Rodeo on Aug. 8 at Jeff Davis Park. Don’t forget the Muskogee Hot Air Balloon Festival, Aug. 21-22 at the Hatbox Event Park, as well as the Ponca Tribal Powwow, Aug. 27-30 at Ponca City’s 20 White Eagle Drive.
