Lionel Richie has cemented his name as a music icon with countless hits, awards and more than 100 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the top-selling artists in the history of music. As a member of the Commodores, Richie developed a groundbreaking style that defied genre categories, penning smashes such as “Still” and “Easy.” After penning “Lady” for Kenny Rogers, and “Endless Love” for Diana Ross, Richie made the decision to do a solo album. In 1982, he made his solo debut with his self-titled album, Lionel Richie. The album contained the hit singles, “Truly,” “You Are” and “My Love.” After two years of solo success, Richie continued to fly high with “Hello,” a sentimental love song that indicated how far he had moved from his R&B roots. Richie reigned in 1985 with “Say You, Say Me” for the film White Nights. The song won Richie an Academy Award and also reached No. 1 on the U.S. charts.
