It’s been three years since Macklemore & Ryan Lewis released their hip-hop infused, pop single, “Thrift Shop,” which definitely shined some light on the underground trend of being “fashionably-cheap.” Accompanied with the success of their first single off their debut album The Heist, the alternative hip-hop duo won four Grammy Awards at the 2014 ceremony, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance. Although, the 2014 Grammy night was a highly successful night for the pair, criticism from twitter and music fans around the world overshadowed the duo’s night. After winning the Grammy award for Best Rap Album, twitter and hip-hop fans were outraged by their award. Many critics and fans felt Kendrick Lamar should have received the Grammy for his critically acclaimed debut album Good Kid, m.A.A.d City, which yielded seven nominations for the 2014 Grammy Awards. After the ceremony, Macklemore released a statement via Instagram, of a text he sent fellow nominee Kendrick Lamar, which read, “You got robbed. I wanted you to win…” Aside from the controversial win, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis also had a much-buzzed-about performance that night. Their rendition of “Same Love” featured a group marriage of same-sex couples, performed by Queen Latifah and Madonna singing “Open Your Heart” to the newlyweds. More recently, the “Thift Shop” singers released “Downtown,” the first single off their upcoming second studio album. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are currently on a U.S. tour.
