At the heart of the town lies Bath Lake, a picturesque granite-based swimming hole fed by the continuous flow of Medicine Creek. This beloved spot delivers clear, refreshingly cool waters ideal for families, featuring a shallow kiddie pool area, a small waterfall, jumping rocks and an island. Built in the early 1900s during the town’s rise as a premier resort near the Wichita Mountains, it draws thousands each summer. Boulders, walking trails and nearby shops enhance the scenic setting. From November to March, the lake transforms into a stocked trout fishing destination.
Just a short distance away, the Medicine Park Aquarium and Natural Sciences Center provides a family-friendly eco-tourism highlight dedicated to conservation through education. Opened in June 2017, it showcases over 100 exhibits with more than 90 species of native and non-native fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals spotlighting Oklahoma wildlife. Highlights include the walk-through Quail Encounter aviary, playful river otters Sam and Dean, Turtle Town feeding sessions, touch tanks, a tide pool, and Moby, the largest blue catfish in captivity. Daily programs feature electric eel demonstrations, Critter Chats and enrichment feedings. A seven-acre botanical garden with native plants offers scenic views of Mount Scott and lies less than a mile from the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge entrance.

For hands-on learning and wonder, stop by the Discovery Outpost. Housed in an early 1900s cobblestone cabin, this family adventure shop brims with educational books, classic literature, science gadgets, toys, fossils, insects and butterflies. Weekly events such as story time, archaeology digs, science experiments, crafts and creative sessions spark curiosity about the natural world in a cozy historic setting.
Music lovers can mark their calendars for The Blues Ball, scheduled for September 4-6 – the 21st rendition of this beloved event.
Event coordinator Dwight Cope describes it vividly: “It’s a three-day festival of traditional blues music with regional and local acts. It’s free to the public, kid-friendly, pet friendly and with food trucks, beer and souvenir vendors. It’s a beautiful environment in the park with 100-year trees around and on the banks of the creek. It will be a holiday weekend good time,” he shares.
This year’s lineup includes Dustin Arbuckle and the Damnations, Jonathon “Boogie” Long, and an All-Star Review on Sunday night. Sponsored by the Medicine Park Economic Authority (which also hosts Rock in the Park in July), the festival fills the town with soulful sounds in a stunning natural backdrop.
