March 17 – Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center
From okhistory.org: Celebrate the beginning of spring at the 31st annual Family Kite Flite Day at Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. Family Kite Flite Day will be held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 17. This will be a free admission day at the site, although donations are appreciated. It will be a great day for families and folks of all ages. Each year since 1987, Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center has hosted a day of spring fun and learning. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, picnics, and kites to this free event. Be sure to wear green since it is also St. Patrick’s Day! Demonstrations by kiters from Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas will include stunt kites, parafoils, and other fancy kites. Volunteers will help guests make their own free sled kite. There will also be arts and crafts vendors, a children’s area, bubble making, a sandbox where visitors can dig for treasures, and kite giveaways. The OHS, Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, and Spiro Mounds Development Association sponsor this event. For more information, visit okhistory.org.
