From 1973 to 1991, Tulsa’s Great Raft Race roared down the Arkansas each year. Its record attendance included 600 rafts, 4500 racers and 150,000 spectators. This year, in teams of five or 10, participants could build a homemade raft or drop a kayak, canoe, paddleboard or inflatable raft into the water. A nine-mile course, from Sand Springs River City Park to the West Festival Park in Tulsa, waves of rafters will be sent on their way every 30 minutes at 8:30 a.m. The first launch will set off at 8 a.m. While this year’s race is not timed, competitive spirit is sure to show up. And if you haven’t already registered for the sold out event, there’s plenty excitement and fun to be had along the banks of the river, watching the action a safe distance from the water.
