The brand-new revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! won big at the 73rd Annual Tony Awards last night, snagging Best Revival of a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Ali Stroker). Tony and Olivier Award-winner Square 1 Theatrics, based in Tulsa, acted as Associate Producer of the production.

Along with the two wins, the musical was nominated for six other awards, including Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Damon Daunno), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Mary Testa), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Laura Jellinek), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Drew Levy), Best Direction of a Musical (Daniel Fish) and Best Orchestrations (Daniel Kluger).

The musical has garnered critical acclaim since its opening in April. In fall 2020, the revival will begin a national tour, beginning (fittingly) in Oklahoma City.

Square 1 Theatrics, co-founded by Ryan Jude Tanner and Jay Krottinger, is no stranger to acclaim. In 2013, Tanner and Krottinger co-produced a revival of Pippin which won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Other Tony nominations include Waitress (Best Musical Nominee – 2016) and Come From Away (Best Musical Nominee – 2017).

“Although I was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois, Oklahoma has been home for 15 years,” says Tanner.  “Jay was born and raised in Broken Arrow. We started Square 1 with Flipside: The Patti Page Story. She was born and raised in the great metropolis of Claremore! It means so much to us to continue storytelling, while, every once in a while, adding the Oklahoma DNA … that’s really the icing on top.”
