For over 60 years, singer Johnny Mathis’ suave ballads helped keep alive the dominance of rock in popular music, and his signature style propelled him to stardom. Mostly known as a ballad artist, Mathis’s discography covers a variety of music genres like jazz, pop, Brazilian music, Spanish music, soul music, rhythm and blues and much more. He began his music career singing in a jazz band. While in college at San Francisco State Univeristy, Mathis won a recording contract after an audition in 1955. Two years later, he scored his first No. 1 hit with “Chances Are” and became known for his distinct rendition of popular Christmas songs. With a span of hits in every decade, Mathis has received the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a member of the Pop Music Hall of Fame and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame.
