Sarah Maud, a Tulsa-based singer and songwriter, best known as a jazz vocalist, returns to the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 5. An undergraduate of the University of Tulsa, Maud credits much of her growth and success to her professor Vernon Howard. “Vernon has always been a huge supporter of mine, helping me with everything,” she told John Wooley in a story for Oklahoma Magazine at the end of 2014. Maud’s debut album, Better Things To Do, which reharmonizes the standards, was released in 2013 and includes Howards name as a co-producer. “[It’s] a hearty and satisfying jazz platter seasoned with reggae, pop and other musical ingredients,” Wooley wrote about the album. Growing up, Maud’s musical ear was drawn to the sounds of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, and that inspiration can be heard in her music, along with the funk and soul that she artistically brings to the genre.
